Art Outside was an evening of talks in July 2024 at ABYSS Brewing pop-up in Newhaven and was part of Look Again Supergraphics Festival.
Talks were selected from an open call.
The programme featured:
Tallin Aylward (Artist & Printmaker)
Tallin spoke about making art in our increasingly privatised landscape, investigating how, through the boundaries of folklore, memory and ecology, we can see our environment with new perspectives. Tallin’s work usually starts with walking, followed by the slow layering of history.
Georgia Hunter (Film programmer, founder of Siren Screen)
Georgia presented Matt McCormick’s short film The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal, narrated by Miranda July. Introducing the film, she led an exploration off graffiti vs street art and the impact of absence on local communities. Through Siren Screen, Georgia programmes films from around the globe, focused on the mythological and mystical.
Bertie Taylor (Photographer)
Newhaven raised photographer Bertie Taylor gave a presentation of some of his works, always inspired by the beauty of the mundane. With a focus on the town’s industrial sites, Bertie spoke about always finding something interesting in the ordinary. His favourite spot in Newhaven is the scrapyard, which features a lot in his internationally recognised photographs.
Toad Lickers Collective
We also delivered two short talks:
What is ‘Art Outside’: high and low art
& DISOBEY: The art of billboards
This was a free event thanks to the sponsorship of Visit Lewes.
